World Economic Forum IdeasLab: Breakthroughs in Brain Research with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
12 September 2013

Three faculty members from the School of Science were invited to present an IdeasLab at the prestigious World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting of the New Champions.

The WEF is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political and academic leaders, and other leaders of society, to shape global, regional and industrial agendas. Also known as the “Summer Davos”, the Annual Meeting of the New Champions is designed to foster interaction, generate insight and achieve impact across all of the Forum’s communities. The 7th Summer Davos in Asia took place in Dalian, PR China from 11 to 13 September 2013, under the theme of “Meeting the Innovation Imperative”. The Meeting brings together more than 1,500 global thought leaders from 90 countries to share strategies and solutions and discuss global issues and risks.

The IdeasLab provides an interactive environment that features visuals and breakout groups to support a brainstorming of collaborative ideas on new trends, technologies and discoveries. Breakthrough ideas and concepts are presented by experts in their field and debated in an open setting with all participants.

Under the theme of “Breakthroughs in Brain Research with HKUST”, Prof. Nancy Ip, Prof. Karl Tsim, and Prof. Mingjie Zhang (Division of Life Science) were specially invited to serve as the discussion leaders and present their ideas through the highly visual "pecha kucha" style of presentation. Each presentation has 15 images that automatically rotate every 20 seconds. The images are representational — no charts, graphs or text — and serve as background to what each faculty member is discussing.

Prof. Nancy Ip (Life Science):
Multidisciplinary approaches to combating brain disorders
Prof. Mingjie Zhang (Life Science):
Viewing brain disorders at the atomic scale
Prof. Karl Tsim (Life Science):
Ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine in brain health
